Sweet success! Recycling doubles in first two weeks

August 22, 2016
Scott County is on a roll! With the new Go All In recycling program, Davenport and Bettendorf residents are recycling more than double what they did last year—in half the time.

“We knew before we started the program that residents were eager to recycle more,” said Kathy Morris, Director of Waste Commission of Scott County (Commission). “Now that they’ve been using their new recycling carts for a few weeks, we’re starting to see the results of that enthusiasm.”

The recycling program launched August 1 and is breaking records. In August 2015, Davenport and Bettendorf residents recycled 195 tons of materials. In the first two weeks of August 2016, they recycled 435 tons, more than doubling the August 2015 total.

The Commission anticipated that incoming recyclables would increase between 30 and 50 percent at the Scott Area Recycling Center, which reopened July 28 following a nine-month closure for construction and remodeling to accommodate new recycling equipment that allows residents to recycle many items that they couldn’t before.

Accepted items include plastics #1-7, with the exception of Styrofoam and plastic bags. Also included are cartons, such as those that contain milk or juice. Canisters with paper sides and a metal bottom, which hold foods like nuts and chips (e.g. Pringles), also are recyclable. Sorting of recyclables is no longer required, and all recyclables go into one cart with wheels. All recyclables must be contained completely inside the cart for collection. (Cardboard should not be bundled or placed next to the cart because crews no longer can collect it this way.)

Davenport and Bettendorf residents can expect to receive a Go All In postcard in the mail in early September. The postcard will include recycling tips and information about the upcoming “right-sizing” period for garbage and recycling carts (Sept. 12-Oct. 14), when they may change cart size without a fee.
